This was a pro-bono project for Irving Middle School in Los Angeles. Working alongside the non-profit, Side Street Projects and the furniture builders, Oscar and Sergio Martinez, we taught a class on design. The goal was to find a problem in the school building that we could solve using good design and a small budget. The kids chose the library. Nobody looked forward to reading in the library. it was filled with hard straight back chairs packed tightly together around a long oak table. This was not a comfortable place to read, nor have a group discussion. The kids built small wood models and together we developed a design intervention.
